Continuitá

A modular, sensory-driven wall system designed to make public and private bathrooms more inclusive, safe and intuitive.

Continuitá is a concept bathroom system developed for Antoniolupi, combining industrial design, interaction principles and universal accessibility. The project reimagines how users with different physical and cultural conditions navigate public restrooms through modularity, light, ergonomics and intelligent hidden structures.

Design Direction: Arch. Giulio Ceppi.

Public bathrooms that claim to be “accessible” often comply with regulations but still fail in real user experience: unclear interactions, poor ergonomics, unfriendly dimensions, and fragmented accessory placement. Our challenge was to redesign the entire system, not a single product, introducing a holistic, elegant and highly functional solution for users of all abilities, while respecting the material and aesthetic language of Antoniolupi

Research and user insights:

  • Movement & Ergonomics: Analysis of wheelchair approach, transfer movements, reach angles, safety points and turning radiuses.

  • Regulations & Existing Solutions: Comparative review of existing accessible toilets, sinks, rails and mirrors across Europe. Identified inconsistencies between regulations and real usability.

  • Design for All Principles: Stability, leverage, intuitive affordances, multi-height interactions, no sharp edges, and simple maintenance as core criteria.

The design language revolves around mono-materiality, smooth transitions, and a “fake wall” system that hides the functional components. This creates visual calmness, higher hygiene, and modular flexibility. Light becomes a guiding element, revealing interaction zones only when needed.

The entire bathroom experience is redesigned as a unified system: sink, mirror, soap dispenser, air dryer, toilet, handrail, shelving, lighting and communication elements. Every component integrates into the structural wall, allowing modular configurations for commercial spaces, hotels and residences.
